There was a time when calling someone “the ace” of the Cincinnati Reds clearly pointed to Hunter Greene. And to be fair, Greene has absolutely pitched like one over the last two seasons. But he’s no longer alone in that conversation. Andrew Abbott’s breakout season — capped with his first All-Star nod — has earned him a spot in that discussion, and Nick Lodolo absolutely belongs as well. Lodolo currently boasts a 3.9 bWAR, ranking 10th among all MLB pitchers — firmly within “ace” territory by just about any definition.
The Reds’ pitching staff is in a great place right now, and two of those arms will be in action tonight. Lodolo takes the mound at Great American Ball Park against the Dodgers, while Greene begins his rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville. The club announced earlier today that Greene will start for the Bats this evening as they face Omaha.
In other roster news, Rece Hinds has been called up from Louisville after TJ Friedl was placed on the paternity list. Congrats to Friedl, who’s expected back in a few days. For now, Will Benson will cover center field, and Gavin Lux will lead off in Friedl’s absence, shifting to left field tonight.
