The transfer portal offers both opportunities and challenges, not just for coaches but also for players. For Ohio State quarterback Air Noland, the crowded quarterback room created limited chances for playing time, leading him to enter the transfer portal.
Coming out of high school, Noland was a highly regarded four-star prospect and one of the top quarterbacks in the Class of 2024, ranking No. 5 among quarterbacks and No. 59 nationally according to On3’s Industry Rankings. Despite his talent, Noland realized that his path to playing time at Ohio State would be difficult due to the competition ahead of him, prompting his decision to explore other options.
Noland has already begun making visits, with his next stop being South Carolina. While the Gamecocks don’t necessarily need a starting quarterback immediately, their situation could change soon. It’s clear that LaNorris Sellers will be the starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, as head coach Shane Beamer has expressed strong confidence in him after the Clemson win. This suggests Sellers will maintain his starting role as long as he remains healthy.

Although Noland might initially see this as a challenge, there’s a potential opportunity. South Carolina’s backup quarterback, Robby Ashford, announced his intention to enter the transfer portal but asked to stay for the bowl game, which Beamer approved. Once the bowl season ends, the backup role will be up for grabs, and Noland could be well-positioned to compete for it.
As a young player, Noland could benefit from sitting behind Sellers, who started as a redshirt freshman. While he didn’t see playing time in 2024 at Ohio State, Noland could get more opportunities at South Carolina, potentially even in specific rushing situations. With star running back Raheim Sanders heading to the NFL, Noland could step in as a dynamic rushing threat, giving him a chance to contribute as a backup quarterback and potentially secure a key role behind Sellers.
