The New York Yankees are continuing their efforts to strengthen a roster that was just one season removed from a World Series appearance.
In their latest move, the Yankees signed first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, the 2022 National League MVP and seven-time All-Star, to a one-year, $12.5 million contract. While this addition is significant on its own, it holds even more weight in terms of the potential opportunities it creates for the Yankees to further reinforce their infield, an area where they have a pressing need.
One such opportunity could be the acquisition of star third baseman Nolan Arenado, who spent the last four seasons alongside Goldschmidt with the St. Louis Cardinals. Arenado, regarded as one of the league’s top players, is considered one of the most desirable assets on the trade market this offseason. The Yankees have already expressed interest in acquiring him, and this recent signing of Goldschmidt could be a strategic move to increase their chances.
According to MLB.com, the Yankees’ acquisition of Goldschmidt might help influence Arenado’s decision to waive his no-trade clause, should the team pursue a trade with the Cardinals.

“Sources added that the veteran first baseman’s presence in New York could play a significant role in persuading former teammate Nolan Arenado to consider joining the Yankees if they move forward with a trade offer,” MLB.com reported. Earlier in the offseason, the Yankees reportedly approached the Cardinals about a potential trade for Arenado. However, their initial attempts were met with resistance, as St. Louis was not willing to take on the contract of veteran pitcher Marcus Stroman, whom the Yankees were hoping to include in the deal.
Arenado, who is 33 years old, still has three years remaining on his lucrative eight-year, $260 million contract with the Cardinals, making any potential trade a major financial consideration for both teams.
