Syracuse, N.Y. — Tyshawn Russell, a transfer wide receiver from South Carolina, has committed to Syracuse football, according to a report from On3.com.
Russell, who did not play for the Gamecocks this season, recorded five receptions for 81 yards as a true freshman in 2023. He initially joined South Carolina as a three-star recruit in the Class of 2023. Russell is the sixth transfer player to sign with Syracuse this offseason, joining a group of nine players who have either transferred out or are currently in the transfer portal.
Russell played high school football at Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he was ranked as the No. 25 prospect in the state by 247 Sports composite rankings, and the No. 1,077 recruit nationally. He also received offers from Virginia Tech and Central Michigan out of high school.
After entering the transfer portal, Russell announced offers from Akron and UMass on his social media. His South Carolina bio highlights his excellent speed, with expectations that he could contribute on special teams as well as a wide receiver. Notably, he did not play receiver in high school until his senior year, having initially played defensive back.
Syracuse’s receiving corps next season will be led by slot receiver Trebor Pena, with the team likely looking to identify two reliable outside receivers during training camp. Players who showed flashes of strong play include Yazeed Haynes, Darrell Gill, Umari Hatcher, Justus Ross-Simmons, and Emanuel Ross.
Russell is the second wide receiver added to Syracuse through the transfer portal this offseason, joining Rutgers transfer Chris Long.
