The Minnesota Vikings’ remarkable 2024 season, which ended in disappointment, left star wide receiver Justin Jefferson optimistic about the team’s future. Despite a stellar 14-3 regular season—their best since 1998—the Vikings faltered late, losing to the Detroit Lions in Week 18 and then to the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card round. Reflecting on the season during an appearance on *PFT Live*, Jefferson expressed confidence in the team’s direction while acknowledging areas for growth. “We thought this was going to be our year,” Jefferson said. “There are key things we need to address, areas to evaluate, and important moves to make this offseason.”
Jefferson stressed that while improvements are necessary, drastic changes aren’t required. “I don’t think we need major overhauls,” he said. “It’s just about adding one or two pieces to get us over the hump.” One of the biggest offseason questions for the Vikings revolves around the quarterback position. Sam Darnold, who played a pivotal role in the team’s 14-win season, is set to become a free agent after signing a one-year, $10 million deal. Meanwhile, rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who missed much of the season due to a meniscus injury, remains on the roster. Jefferson voiced strong support for re-signing Darnold, telling *USA TODAY Sports*, “I would love to have Sam back and try to do it again. It would be phenomenal to have him as our quarterback.”
Darnold had a career-best season in 2024, completing 66.2% of his passes for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. His performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection and silenced critics who doubted his ability to be a starting quarterback after previous stints as a backup with the 49ers and Panthers. “For Sam to go out there with all that pressure and still play confidently and freely… it’s a great thing,” Jefferson said. “I’m glad he showed the world he’s a baller and can excel in this league.”
While the Vikings’ decision on Darnold remains uncertain, Jefferson acknowledged that McCarthy will still have opportunities to prove himself. “JJ will get his chance to show what he can do,” Jefferson said, praising the rookie’s eagerness to learn. As the Vikings assess their roster, Jefferson remains confident in the team’s trajectory. “Winning 14 games in this league is no small feat,” he said. “Making the playoffs and only losing three games is incredibly difficult.”
As the Vikings head into an offseason filled with critical decisions, particularly at quarterback, Jefferson’s belief in the team’s potential suggests Minnesota will be aiming for another deep playoff run in 2025.
