In an effort to move past their recent struggles, the New York Jets are bringing in a seasoned executive to bolster their front office.

According to a Tuesday afternoon report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Jets are appointing former Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman to an advisory role. Spielman, 62, who served as the Vikings’ GM from 2012 to 2021, led the team to four postseason appearances during his tenure, including an NFC championship game in 2017. However, he was let go by the Vikings in January 2022.
This offseason, the Jets were on the hunt for both a new head coach and general manager. Rapoport noted that Spielman played a key role in assisting the team during this search, which ultimately resulted in the hiring of new head coach Aaron Glenn and new general manager Darren Mougey. Spielman brings a wealth of experience to the Jets, including a one-year stint as the Miami Dolphins’ general manager in 2004.
The Jets, who currently hold the longest playoff drought in North American sports at 14 years, are looking to turn the page after a disappointing 5-12 season—their fifth consecutive year with double-digit losses. The addition of Spielman is seen as a step toward revitalizing the franchise and breaking their cycle of underperformance.
