The New York Yankees are in urgent need of at least one relief pitcher. As pitchers and catchers arrived for spring training,
Yankees reporter Chris Kirschner revealed that two crucial relievers would be temporarily unavailable. This is undoubtedly disappointing news for Yankees fans, especially before any official workouts have begun. However, there are still potential solutions, including a $6 million option: Buck Farmer.
Farmer, who remains unsigned for the 2025 season, had a strong performance with the Cincinnati Reds in 2024. He appeared in 61 games, posting a 3.04 ERA and striking out 70 batters. His contributions were highly effective, resulting in a career-high 1.7 WAR for the season.
Despite turning 34 soon, Farmer continues to pitch at an elite level, making it somewhat surprising that he hasn’t been signed yet. The Yankees could greatly benefit from his experience if they decide to bolster their bullpen through external acquisitions. According to his Baseball Savant metrics, Farmer’s fastball velocity ranks in the 28th percentile, and his ground ball rate is in the 18th percentile. While he may not increase his velocity at this stage of his career, he could focus on improving his control and enhancing his ability to induce weak ground balls, which would be easy for his infielders to handle.
With a projected salary of $6 million for 2025, Farmer might even accept a lower offer, given the quiet state of his market as the season approaches.
