Four-star running back Jaylen McGill has reopened his recruitment after a short-lived commitment to Rutgers. The South Carolina native is considered one of the top players in the state and is beginning to attract more attention as his senior season approaches.
After decommitting from Rutgers, McGill took aim at the program, making a pointed statement shortly after his decision. The 2026 recruit already has offers from top schools such as Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida State, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech. South Carolina, his in-state school, has also extended a scholarship offer.
McGill originally committed to Rutgers in January following a recruiting trip that included a visit to Madison Square Garden. However, less than three weeks later, he reversed his decision. Now, McGill’s recruitment is fully open, with many speculating that he may choose a school closer to home.

A recent social media post only fueled those rumors. McGill hinted at the possibility of returning to South Carolina, stating he planned to “Put on for his city” with his next college commitment. On Wednesday, he officially walked away from Rutgers and thanked the coaching staff in a farewell post. The following day, McGill “liked” a comment that referred to Rutgers as a “poverty” program, which was part of a thread between Rutgers and Clemson fans.
McGill, who was set to join Rutgers just a month ago, now seems unlikely to return to the program. With plenty of options in the SEC and ACC, it will be intriguing to see which school secures this highly sought-after rusher.
