MAJOR-NEWS; Deadline Extension: Vikings Make Bold Move with Aaron Jones’ Contract Before Free Agency – What’s Next for His Future?

The Vikings have pushed back the void date, originally scheduled for this Monday, to the last day before free agency, giving both the team and Aaron Jones extra time to work out a potential new deal. If no extension is reached by the original deadline, Minnesota would have faced a $3.2 million dead cap hit for 2025.

While this move provides more flexibility, ESPN’s Yates stressed that it doesn’t guarantee an agreement between the two parties. However, it does allow the Vikings to avoid the full cap impact in 2025 if a deal is finalized before free agency starts. This extension hints that the team is at least considering keeping Jones instead of letting him test the market.

Jones, 30, had a standout season in 2024, setting a career high with 1,138 rushing yards and five touchdowns while averaging 4.5 yards per carry in 17 games. His durability and strong performance were key factors in Minnesota’s success. As a steady force in the backfield, Jones helped balance the offense, relieving pressure on the passing game and playing a significant role in the Vikings’ 14-3 record and second-place finish in the NFC North.

Despite the successful regular season, Minnesota’s playoff hopes were dashed in a Wild Card loss to the Los Angeles Rams, where the offense struggled to find its groove against a tough Rams defense.

With the void date extended, the Vikings now have more time to decide whether Jones will be part of their plans for 2025. The extra time also gives Jones a chance to evaluate his options, whether that’s re-signing with the Vikings or seeking a more lucrative deal in free agency.

If Minnesota opts not to re-sign Jones, they may turn to the draft or look for another veteran running back to fill the position. Jones’ future remains a key storyline this offseason as the Vikings look to build on their strong 2024 campaign.
