Oswaldo Peraza, once considered the New York Yankees’ top prospect, is now being labeled as a potential trade candidate. After failing to meet expectations, Peraza faces a crucial spring training as he’s out of minor-league options, putting his place on the Opening Day roster at risk. FanSided’s MLB analyst Rucker Haringey highlighted him as one of the Yankees’ biggest trade assets.
“Peraza is at a crossroads with the Yankees,” Haringey noted. “Since he’s out of options, he needs a strong spring to secure a spot, but it’s not guaranteed. If he doesn’t make the roster, he could be dealt before the season starts. While his star may have faded, he remains a solid defensive player with versatility, especially for teams in need of a shortstop.”
Peraza, 24, still has a chance to earn a role, but with Anthony Volpe firmly entrenched at shortstop and Jazz Chisholm Jr. likely moving to second, playing time will be scarce for Peraza. Over his brief MLB career, he’s posted a .216 average with 4 home runs and 17 RBIs in 74 at-bats, and his performance in spring training will determine his future with the team.
Despite being just 24 and once regarded as a top-tier prospect, Haringey believes the Yankees may not receive a substantial return for Peraza in a trade. If he fails to make the roster, New York could be forced to trade him for a mid-tier prospect, or worse, lose him on waivers. Haringey believes a minor return for Peraza would be the best outcome for the Yankees if they part ways with him.
Meanwhile, Yankees GM Brian Cashman has high hopes for his team’s future, despite offseason losses like Juan Soto. With additions like Max Fried, Cody Bellinger, and Paul Goldschmidt, the Yankees are focused on reclaiming the AL East title and pushing for another World Series appearance. Cashman remains determined to stay competitive, noting the ongoing challenge of navigating the tough American League landscape.
