The Minnesota Vikings are facing some pivotal decisions as free agency approaches. After an impressive 14-3 regular season, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell know there’s no time to relax on past successes. Even Super Bowl champions like the Philadelphia Eagles are already deep into planning for the 2025 season, and the Vikings must do the same.
Since their disappointing Wild Card exit to the Los Angeles Rams a month ago, the Vikings have shifted into offseason mode, determined to improve their roster for next year.
The biggest challenge they face? The quarterback position. It appears the future is with J.J. McCarthy, their first-round pick from last year’s draft. As long as McCarthy recovers fully from the torn meniscus he sustained in the preseason, he’s expected to lead the offense.
However, if there’s any concern about his health come training camp, the Vikings may opt to franchise Sam Darnold. Despite Darnold’s strong performance this season, his struggles in the final two games showed he may not be the long-term solution for the team. While he’s a reliable backup, the Vikings would be better served by having a healthy McCarthy under center.

The team also faces some critical free-agent decisions. While the interior offensive line remains a weak spot, and the secondary has been a consistent problem since Mike Zimmer’s tenure, keeping key players is essential for moving forward.
Cornerback Byron Murphy should be a top priority for the Vikings. Coming off his best season, the 27-year-old has emerged as a ball hawk with six interceptions and 81 tackles. Murphy’s reliability, including playing in all 17 games, makes him a cornerstone of the secondary moving forward. Though retaining him will be costly, his playmaking ability is crucial to O’Connell and defensive coordinator Brian Flores’s plans.
Safety Cam Bynum has also become an indispensable player. Under Flores’ guidance, Bynum has developed into a key figure in the Vikings’ defense. He posted 96 tackles, three interceptions, and 10 passes defensed last season, but it’s his instincts at free safety that set him apart. His growth has been undeniable, and the Vikings will need to keep him as a cornerstone of their defense.
