The New York Yankees could look drastically different in 2025 compared to the roster that took them to the World Series this year. They’ve already made significant additions, including Fernando Cruz, Max Fried, Devin Williams, Cody Bellinger, and Paul Goldschmidt, while parting ways with Jose Trevino and Gleyber Torres.
They also saw Juan Soto leave via free agency. More departures could be on the horizon this winter. FanSided’s Zachary Rotman speculated that the Yankees might trade starting pitcher Marcus Stroman, following Torres’ exit. Although Stroman has been available for trade, nothing has materialized so far.
Rotman pointed out that with the signing of Max Fried, the Yankees now have seven MLB-caliber starters. The departure of Nestor Cortes reduced that number to six, but New York doesn’t need a six-man rotation. Given the high demand for starting pitching, there will likely be teams willing to take a chance on Stroman, who has a solid track record.
Trading him to a team in need of a starter, while replacing him with a better fit, seems like a logical move. With Stroman not featuring in the 2024 postseason, he may be the odd man out in 2025.
A potential trade could mirror the Nestor Cortes deal that brought Williams to New York. A team like the Detroit Tigers could be a good match for Stroman, and the Yankees might include a prospect in exchange for a hitter like Jace Jung or Spencer Torkelson.
