The past year has been a rollercoaster for former Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones. Just a year ago, he was preparing for his eighth season with the Packers, where he was a key locker room leader. However, things took a turn when Jones was asked to take a pay cut, eventually getting released and signing with the Minnesota Vikings.
In his first season with Minnesota, Jones had an impressive performance, rushing for 1,138 yards and five touchdowns, while also catching 51 passes for 408 yards and two touchdowns. Despite being 30, he continued to play at a high level, resembling the explosive back who ranks third in Packers’ history for rushing yards.
Now, as Jones heads into the offseason, there’s speculation about his future. Some have wondered if he’ll stay in the NFC North, and his plans became clearer after a recent contract move.
Aaron Jones’ Contract Adjustment Raises Hopes for Vikings Return
According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Vikings and Jones have agreed to push back the void date on his contract. Originally set to void on Monday, which would have triggered a $3.2 million cap penalty for Minnesota in 2025, the deadline has now been extended to March 11, the day before free agency begins.

While this move doesn’t guarantee Jones will return to the Vikings, it gives both sides more time to negotiate. Jones, a former Pro Bowler, could potentially agree to stay with Minnesota and strengthen their running back group, which currently includes free-agent Cam Akers and fourth-year running back Ty Chandler, who averaged just 3.3 yards per carry last season.
The Vikings could also choose to let Jones walk and pursue younger options in the draft, with promising running backs like Ashton Jeanty, Kaleb Johnson, and Treveyon Henderson available. However, bringing Jones back for another season and pairing him with a draft pick is also a viable option.
While Jones may not have another eight years left in the tank, he still has plenty to offer and could play a vital role in helping the Vikings in 2025, possibly leading to another season in Minnesota.
