Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy was hospitalized Monday night at Massachusetts General Hospital, causing him to miss Team USA’s loss to Sweden in the Four Nations Tournament. McAvoy was scratched from the lineup due to what Team USA coach Mike Sullivan described as an “upper-body injury.” Today, Frank Seravalli reported that McAvoy was admitted for an infection stemming from a minor injury. His availability for Thursday night’s USA vs. Canada Four Nations Final remains uncertain.
The injury appears to trace back to last Thursday’s game, when McAvoy was knocked down and driven into the goalpost during the third period. He immediately clutched his left shoulder after the collision but continued to play in that game against Finland and was back on the ice Saturday night against Canada. Notably, McAvoy underwent surgery on his left shoulder in 2022.
The 27-year-old defenseman has already missed seven games with the Bruins this season, from January 12 to 29, due to an undisclosed injury. This year, the former Boston University standout has tallied seven goals and 16 assists in 50 games. A five-time All-Star, McAvoy has also finished in the top ten for Norris Trophy voting three times in his career.
Team USA is set to face Canada in the Four Nations Tournament final on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Bruins have 25 games left in the regular season and are currently just outside the playoff picture. NHL play resumes on February 22 with a home game against Anaheim.
The Boston Bruins have announced that McAvoy will not return to the tournament on Thursday and will provide further updates on his status as more information becomes available.
