MAJOR-UPDATE: Yankees Target $5 Million Left-Handed Reliever-A Steal That Could Transform Their Bullpen!

The New York Yankees are on the lookout for a left-handed reliever to bolster their bullpen. While there are plenty of left-handed relief options available on the market, the Yankees are particularly interested in one:

Andrew Chafin. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees are pursuing the 34-year-old, who has had a journeyman career, playing for seven different teams. In 2024, Chafin split his season between the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers, posting a 3.51 ERA in 62 games. His performance was notably stronger with the Tigers, but he still struck out over one batter per inning with both teams, finishing with a 28.5% strikeout rate.

The Yankees’ interest in Chafin makes sense for several reasons. Despite his age, he is still performing at a high level late in his career. More importantly, the Yankees’ current bullpen composition highlights the need for a left-handed reliever.

As it stands, they don’t have any lefties in their bullpen. While it’s not essential for teams to maintain a 50/50 split of left- and right-handed pitchers, most teams prefer to have at least two lefties available. Chafin is expected to sign a one-year deal for just under $5 million in 2025, making him an affordable option for the Yankees as they continue to rebuild their roster.
