The Auburn basketball team secured an 82-70 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon, with standout performance from Johni Broome, a strong contender for National Player of the Year, playing a pivotal role in the win. As the season nears its end, each game is crucial for Broome’s bid to be recognized as the top player in college basketball, and this game certainly bolstered his case.
Broome delivered a career-high 31 points, along with 14 rebounds and four assists, marking his 17th double-double of the season. For the Tigers’ star, who averages 18.6 points, 11 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, this performance was just another day at the office. “My teammates set me up, my coaches positioned me well, and God helped the ball go through the hoop,” Broome told Auburn Rivals. “Nothing extraordinary. I’m just getting back to my usual form.”
Broome’s “usual form” refers to his level of play before he suffered an ankle injury earlier in the season during the South Carolina game. Although he only missed two games, the recovery process has been gradual as he continues to compete.
Recently, Auburn basketball launched a dedicated website to support Broome’s Player of the Year campaign. Head coach Bruce Pearl believes Broome’s performance in this game solidified his case for the award. “That’s why he’s the Player of the Year,” Pearl said after the game, according to Auburn Undercover. “He has incredible composure, plays at a great pace offensively, and his patience and precision were on full display. His aggressive attacks at the rim made all the difference tonight.”
Pearl added, “We had Broome, and they didn’t. And he played exceptionally well.”
The Tigers will next face Ole Miss this Wednesday at Neville Arena.
