The Minnesota Vikings have decided to let Sam Darnold test the free agent market this offseason, a move that is widely expected to result in him signing with a new team. One of the top suitors for Darnold could be the Las Vegas Raiders.
While the Vikings value Darnold’s strong arm and his potential, they are equally invested in their 2024 first-round pick, J.J. McCarthy, and seem committed to his development. After parting ways with veteran QB Kirk Cousins, the Vikings have found success with a more affordable approach at quarterback, which is likely to influence their decision to let Darnold walk.
On the other hand, Darnold, eager to secure a lucrative contract while he’s still in his prime, could be looking to land a top-tier opportunity elsewhere. According to CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin, Darnold is predicted to sign a three-year, $114 million deal with the Raiders.

The Raiders, under the leadership of Super Bowl-winning coach Pete Carroll, could be an ideal destination for Darnold. Carroll has strong connections to Darnold’s alma mater, USC, which could strengthen the bond between the two.
In addition, the Raiders have legendary quarterback Tom Brady as a minority owner, and Brady’s influence could play a significant role in the team’s decision-making. The Raiders are poised to be big players in free agency, with over $99.5 million in salary cap space, the second-highest in the league.
In comparison, the Vikings have $63.3 million in cap space, ranking seventh, which may limit their ability to compete with other teams financially for Darnold’s services. With the Raiders well-positioned to offer Darnold a substantial contract and a fresh start, it seems likely that Darnold’s future lies away from Minnesota.
