Breaking News; Shocking Decision: Kentucky Most Decorated QB Stuns College Football World With Sudden Retirement.

Kentucky quarterback Brock Vandagriff has decided to retire from football despite having one season of eligibility remaining, as reported by the Lexington-Herald Leader on Sunday. The university has confirmed the news, marking the end of Vandagriff’s college career.

Vandagriff did not play in Kentucky’s season finale against Louisville, capping off a season in which he threw for 1,593 yards, 10 touchdowns, and eight interceptions across 11 games.

His performance, while solid at times, was marred by inconsistency, as he was benched on two occasions and only surpassed 200 passing yards in two games. One of his near-misses came in a November 2 loss to then-No. 7 Tennessee, when he was knocked out of the game with a concussion after reaching 123 passing yards midway through the third quarter.

In the wake of Vandagriff’s retirement, Kentucky has added Zach Calzada, formerly of Incarnate Word and Texas A&M, from the transfer portal. Calzada, who started for Texas A&M in 2021, will join Kentucky for the 2025 season, which will be his seventh in college football.

Vandagriff was initially a highly touted five-star recruit in the 2021 class, committing to Oklahoma before flipping to Georgia. However, he struggled to earn playing time behind established quarterbacks Stetson Bennett and Carson Beck during his three years with the Bulldogs.

After transferring to Kentucky for the 2023 season, Vandagriff hoped for more opportunities, but his tenure was plagued by struggles, including his midseason concussion and benchings.

The Wildcats now face a quarterback situation with Cutter Boley starting in the 41-14 loss to Louisville, while fellow quarterback Gavin Wimsatt, who struggled this season with four interceptions in 39 attempts, has entered the transfer portal.
