Shane Beamer is clearly frustrated and is holding the referees responsible for his anger.
In his post-first-quarter interview, Beamer came close to fully expressing his displeasure with the officiating crew, though he still made his criticisms of certain calls or lack thereof.
On the sideline during the first quarter, Beamer was visibly upset, needing to be restrained by staff members to avoid getting penalized. His frustration began when a delay of game was called on South Carolina’s defense after a signaling motion led to movement on the Illinois offensive line.
This was followed by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on South Carolina’s freshman EDGE rusher Dylan Stewart after a play near the Illinois sideline. Beamer’s anger grew when he claimed Illinois broke the huddle with 12 players on the field, which he argued should have resulted in a penalty for having too many players.
Beamer briefly paused during his interview, seemingly stopping himself from continuing his rant. Despite his attempt to refrain from further criticism by saying, “Whatever, I’m not going to get in trouble with officiating,” it likely won’t prevent consequences.
Publicly criticizing referees in an on-camera interview is likely to result in a significant fine for the fourth-year head coach.
However, Beamer acknowledged that his team also needs to improve its performance, stating that South Carolina wasn’t executing well enough. He emphasized that the team wasn’t playing the way they are capable of.
Quarterback LaNorris Sellers has struggled to find a rhythm, and the team appears undisciplined with the high number of penalties called against them. Although this game is being officiated by a Big 12 crew, South Carolina must adjust and play within the constraints of the officiating.
