On Tuesday night, Illinois head coach Bret Bielema declined to comment on South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer after the heated Citrus Bowl. In response to a question about Beamer, Bielema said, “It was a good football game.
I think the best thing is that we got ourselves into a bowl that means a lot to this program. Ten wins – fifth time in school history. We’re working to build something sustainable.
I can’t say enough about our players’ effort and, of course, a really good South Carolina team. We’re thrilled to get the win.” Bielema’s remarks came after reporter Quint Kessenich asked him about his altercation with Beamer during the game. While Bielema sidestepped the question, Beamer didn’t hold back.
“It’s competitive out there, but in all my years in football, I’ve never seen an opposing coach come over to the other team’s sideline and make a gesture toward the opposing head coach,” Beamer said.
It was [expletive]—to be honest… especially when his own player is down injured.” Fans quickly rallied behind Beamer, calling Bielema’s actions “classless.” One fan said, “Classless. Should have been a flag,” while another added, “At the risk of offending @IlliniFootball fans: Bret Bielema is a dink. Classless.
Other fans criticized Bielema for taunting Beamer instead of focusing on his injured player, with one saying, “Bret has always been a scumbag and continues to prove it.” Another fan even expressed surprise, saying, “I stand with Shane Beamer for once. Never thought I’d see the day. Low class by Bret Bielema.”
In the end, Illinois secured a 21-17 victory, as the Big Ten improved to 4-1 against the SEC this bowl season.
