The New York Yankees have temporarily shut down starting pitcher Luis Gil after he experienced tightness near his pitching shoulder during a bullpen session on Friday. Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed that Gil is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his right shoulder on Saturday to assess the issue. The move appears to be precautionary, coming about a month before the start of Major League Baseball’s season. Boone and the organization are optimistic that the time off will allow their young star to recover fully and return to peak health.
Gil, who won the American League’s Rookie of the Year award last season after recording 171 strikeouts in 29 starts, is a key part of the Yankees’ plans for 2025. He is expected to anchor one of the most formidable starting rotations in baseball, alongside Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt. The Yankees are hopeful that Gil’s shoulder issue is minor and that he will be ready to contribute to what promises to be a dominant pitching staff.
