At the start of the offseason, it seemed almost certain that Nolan Arenado would be traded from the St. Louis Cardinals. However, as the biggest moves of MLB free agency have come and gone, the eight-time All-Star remains with the Cardinals.
Despite the Cardinals’ efforts to move the six-time Platinum Glove winner, including a nearly completed trade to the Houston Astros that fell apart when Arenado refused to waive his no-trade clause, no other suitors have emerged.
Now, it appears that Arenado may not be traded until spring training. The Cardinals have made it clear they are looking to move the 33-year-old five-time Silver Slugger, but there’s been little progress since the Astros deal collapsed.
Although two major AL East teams, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, have been linked to Arenado over the winter, it remains unclear where either team currently stands in terms of interest.
The situation has led to the possibility that Arenado, a 10-time Gold Glove winner, may remain with the Cardinals for the upcoming season.
While it’s likely only a matter of time before a team steps in to take on his contract, many teams may be exploring other options first before revisiting a trade for the accomplished third baseman.
