The NFL offseason is heating up as free agency kicks off next week, with many players expected to change teams. The groundwork for numerous deals was laid during last week’s scouting combine in Indianapolis, where 329 college prospects showcased their skills, met with teams, and underwent medical evaluations. Behind the scenes, front office executives were busy discussing their own rosters and potential targets for free agency or trades. Among the biggest names generating buzz were Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and Myles Garrett.
**Aaron Rodgers and the Giants?**
Rodgers is set to become a free agent after the New York Jets release him. Jets GM Darren Mougey and coach Aaron Glenn defended the decision, emphasizing the team’s commitment to winning now despite parting ways with the four-time MVP, whose two-year stint in New York was underwhelming. Meanwhile, Garrett, the 2023 AP Defensive Player of the Year, requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns last month. However, Browns GM Andrew Berry and coach Kevin Stefanski have made it clear they have no intention of trading one of the league’s elite pass rushers.
Several quarterback-needy teams are exploring options, including Rodgers, Wilson, Sam Darnold, and Justin Fields. The New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders initially pursued Matthew Stafford but had to pivot after he re-signed with the Los Angeles Rams. Rodgers has expressed a desire to play for a contender in a warm-weather location, which seemingly rules out the Giants. However, sources indicate there’s mutual interest between Rodgers and the Giants, though the Raiders could also be a potential fit if they believe he aligns with offensive coordinator Chip Kelly’s system. A reunion between Wilson and Raiders coach Pete Carroll is considered unlikely, with Darnold or Fields potentially better suited for Las Vegas, who may also target a quarterback with the No. 6 overall draft pick.
**2025 NFL Draft Needs**
The Tennessee Titans, holding the No. 1 overall pick, are among several teams in need of a starting quarterback, along with the Browns (No. 2) and Giants (No. 3). The Jets, picking seventh, have expressed confidence in Tyrod Taylor but are expected to add a veteran and draft a quarterback early. The Pittsburgh Steelers are also in the mix, aiming to retain Wilson or Fields or pursue a veteran like Rodgers or Darnold.
If the Browns reconsider and decide to trade Garrett, the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders could emerge as suitors. The Eagles, known for bold moves, signed Saquon Barkley last year, while the Commanders acquired Deebo Samuel for just a fifth-round pick, positioning them to make a play for Garrett.
**Wide Receiver Shakeup**
While Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are expected to stay with the Cincinnati Bengals, other big-name receivers could be on the move. The Seattle Seahawks might trade DK Metcalf, with the Raiders and Packers as potential destinations. Stefon Diggs and Amari Cooper are set to hit free agency, offering veteran options for teams. Chris Godwin, recovering from an ankle injury, is a priority for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but his return depends on the price.
With the NFL offseason just beginning, the coming weeks promise plenty of drama and blockbuster moves.
