The former 49ers quarterback will remain on the sidelines for the 2024 NFL season, despite changes at quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys.
With starting QB Dak Prescott sidelined for several weeks due to a hamstring injury, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy announced that veteran backup Cooper Rush will take over the starting role.
As a result, Trey Lance, who spent two seasons with the 49ers after being drafted third overall in 2021, will continue as a backup.
McCarthy praised Rush, calling him one of the most respected backup quarterbacks he’s had, comparing him to former NFL MVP Rich Gannon. “Rush brings the type of credibility you want in a backup. He’s a great teammate, someone young players can look up to. He’s incredibly smart and instinctive, doing an excellent job running the scout team and always handling himself like a true professional. We have total confidence in him,” McCarthy said Monday (h/t 105.3 The Fan).
Rush holds a 5-1 record as a starter. However, with Lance set to become a free agent after the 2024 season, Dallas might want to consider giving him an opportunity. Over four career starts, Lance has a 2-2 record, with 635 yards and two touchdowns, completing 55.4% of his passes (46 of 83).
