With the 2025 NFL Combine now behind them, the Minnesota Vikings are turning their focus to March 10, the start of the free agent negotiating period. Just two days later, on March 12, the new league year begins, and teams can officially start signing free agents at 3 p.m. CST.
The Vikings face some crucial decisions in the coming week and need a solid plan as the NFL offseason moves quickly. The pace is expected to ramp up on Wednesday, with key players like Aaron Jones, Byron Murphy Jr., Cam Bynum, and Shaq Griffin all set to become free agents. Additionally, veterans Harrison Smith and Stephon Gilmore are reportedly contemplating retirement.
Aside from potentially re-signing some of their own players, the Vikings are expected to be highly active when free agency opens on Monday. According to Alec Lewis of The Athletic, there are two notable mid-20s free agent linemen to watch—Will Fries, a guard from the Colts, and Milton Williams, a defensive tackle from the Eagles.
- Milton Williams,
The Vikings are seeking to strengthen their roster, particularly on the interior of the offensive and defensive lines, at cornerback, and potentially other positions. With over $60 million in cap space, Minnesota is well-positioned to compete for premium free agent talent. The market will be competitive, but the Vikings are ready to make moves.
Fries, who was drafted by the Colts in 2021, had an outstanding 2024 season, earning an impressive 86.9 PFF grade, making him an attractive target for teams like the Vikings who need help on the offensive line. Williams, a Super Bowl champion with the Eagles, posted a remarkable 90.4 PFF grade last season, ranking second in the NFL behind Chris Jones, and is expected to be in high demand, especially by teams in need of interior pass rush help.
The Vikings are set for an active and busy free agency period. Expect significant moves, and with several important decisions to be made, this offseason could be a game-changer for the team. Whether they land a big signing or focus on improving depth, the next few weeks will likely shape the team’s future.
