BREAKING; End of an Era: Beloved Vol Network Radio Analyst Bertelkamp Announces Retirement – What’s Next for Tennessee?

Bert Bertelkamp, the longtime radio color analyst for the University of Tennessee men’s basketball team, announced his retirement on Friday, concluding a 26-year career that will end after the 2024-25 season. For over two decades, Bertelkamp partnered with Bob Kesling, who is also retiring in April, as the voices of Tennessee basketball on the Vol Network. Together, they chronicled many of the program’s most iconic moments, including conference titles and deep NCAA Tournament runs.

Reflecting on his career, Bertelkamp said, “Being the color analyst for Tennessee basketball has been an incredible honor. I’ve met so many wonderful people and built lifelong connections. This journey has been unforgettable, and I’m deeply grateful.” Known for his lively catchphrases like “Money” and “Talk to me,” Bertelkamp’s commentary accompanied teams that won four SEC regular-season championships, one SEC Tournament title, and made 15 NCAA Tournament appearances, with eight Sweet Sixteens and two Elite Eights.

Before broadcasting, Bertelkamp played guard for Tennessee from 1976 to 1980, starting three seasons and amassing 332 assists. His 16 assists in a 1980 NCAA Tournament game remain a program record. As a player, he helped secure the 1976-77 SEC title and the 1979 SEC Tournament crown.

Steve Early, Vice President of the Vol Network, praised Bertelkamp’s legacy: “Bert’s impact on Tennessee basketball spans generations—as a broadcaster, player, and philanthropist. His passion and expertise made him a fan favorite, and his partnership with Bob Kesling is legendary.”

Bertelkamp’s family ties to Tennessee run deep. His father, Hank, a former Volunteers captain (1950-53), is among the program’s oldest living letter winners. Together, they established the Bertelkamp Basketball Scholarship Endowment in 2004. The men’s basketball offices at Food City Center are named in Hank’s honor.

Outside basketball, Bertelkamp leads Bertelkamp Automation, a Knoxville-based company, alongside his father and son. The family actively supports local charities, including the United Way and McNabb Center.

Bertelkamp thanked his wife, children, and late mother for their unwavering support, and credited Kesling for their successful partnership. His final broadcast with Kesling will be Saturday’s game against South Carolina, where the duo will be honored at halftime for their contributions to Tennessee basketball.
