The Minnesota Vikings face a crucial decision this offseason regarding their quarterback situation. With Sam Darnold set to become a free agent and J.J. McCarthy waiting for his opportunity, what path will the team take? One option is to re-sign Darnold, but that would likely mean McCarthy remains on the bench, and Darnold would probably demand a multi-year deal.
Alternatively, the Vikings could let Darnold walk, but that raises the question of whether they believe McCarthy is ready to step up as the starter in 2025. It’s a critical decision that could shape the team’s future.
However, another possibility has been suggested: could the Vikings bring back a familiar face this offseason? NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah has proposed a surprising idea. A short-term reunion with isn’t completely out of the question.
“Nobody’s talked about this, but I think it’s an intriguing conversation,” Jeremiah said. “If Sam Darnold leaves, maybe to the Steelers, the Vikings would need a veteran to support McCarthy. Kirk Cousins could be that guy, buying some time while McCarthy develops.”
Kirk Cousins
While Cousins struggled during the 2024 season with the Atlanta Falcons, throwing for 3,508 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions, his familiarity with head coach Kevin O’Connell’s system could make him an attractive, low-cost option for the Vikings.
This reunion could offer the team stability, allowing McCarthy time to adjust before taking the reins. It’s certainly a move worth considering, depending on how other factors unfold.
