The St. Louis Cardinals are still exploring ways to reduce payroll ahead of the 2025 season. After Nolan Arenado blocked a potential trade to the Houston Astros, the team is running out of options to offload his contract. As a result, they are now considering alternative methods to cut costs.
One possibility is trading one or both of their starting pitchers. According to a report by Will Sammon and Katie Woo, shared by FanSided, the Cardinals are prepared to pivot to trading pitchers if they cannot find a trade partner for Arenado or are unwilling to absorb more of his salary.
While trading away starting pitchers isn’t their preferred approach—especially since the team would like to keep Erick Fedde until at least the trade deadline—the Cardinals are open to exploring offers for both Fedde and Steven Matz, whose contracts are set to expire.
The team’s primary goal remains moving Arenado, but if that fails, general manager John Mozeliak is ready to explore other options. Fedde is scheduled to earn $7.5 million in 2025, while Matz’s contract is more expensive at $12.5 million. Although they’re not actively shopping either pitcher, the Cardinals are reportedly willing to entertain offers for both.
