Amid the New York Yankees’ recent challenges, All-Star second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. is here to lift the mood. On Sunday afternoon, Chisholm wowed fans with a massive 400-foot home run against St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Andre Pallante.
The Yankees posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Ya like Jazz?” Chisholm and shortstop Anthony Volpe each hit home runs in the 6-5 loss. Chisholm finished 2-for-3, raising his spring average to .182. His home run, which garnered over 108,000 views on X at the time of publication, provided a brief moment of joy for Yankees fans. Recently, ace Gerrit Cole joined players like Giancarlo Stanton (elbows), DJ LeMahieu (calf), and Luis Gil (lat) on the injury list with an elbow issue.
At least the Yankees still have Chisholm, who hit .273 with 11 home runs, 23 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases last season. After joining the Yankees in July, the 2022 All-Star posted 1.5 bWAR and an .825 OPS. “So excited to watch a full season of Jazz,” one X user commented. “40/40 incoming.” Another added, “I LOVE JAZZ, give me this all year, kid!” Chisholm is expected to hit in the middle of the Yankees’ lineup, with manager Aaron Boone suggesting that catcher Austin Wells could lead off, followed by Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Paul Goldschmidt.
While Chisholm primarily played third base for the Yankees last year, the departure of Gleyber Torres to the Detroit Tigers has cleared the way for Chisholm to return to second base. The 27-year-old now has a tremendous opportunity.
Having earned nearly $18 million, Chisholm could be in line for a major contract extension. “I’m very high on Jazz this season,” one user posted. “Jazz also moving full-time back to middle infield should only help.” Another user remarked, “Yanks just might, maybe, have one of the most exciting and best players in NY.”
