When the Boston Bruins claimed Oliver Wahlstrom off waivers, it was a move made out of desperation by GM Don Sweeney in an effort to bolster the team’s secondary scoring. Wahlstrom, who had struggled with the New York Islanders, never managed to make a significant impact with the Bruins.
A few weeks ago, the Bruins placed Wahlstrom on waivers again, and as expected, he cleared and was assigned to the Providence Bruins in the AHL. Wahlstrom has yet to find his game at the NHL level, and the Bruins’ gamble on him didn’t pay off. However, things have started to look up for him in the AHL.
Since joining Providence, Wahlstrom has begun to show signs of life, scoring five goals in just four games. Notably, he scored a hat trick in a 5-2 win over the Toronto Marlies, marking the first hat trick by a Providence player this season—a bit surprising given the impressive performances from Georgii Merkulov before he was called up to Boston.

Wahlstrom had several opportunities to prove himself on the Bruins’ third line under interim coach Joe Sacco, but in 16 games, he managed just one goal and one assist—far from ideal for a player expected to contribute more offensively.
With only 17 games left in the season and after a busy trade deadline, there will be plenty of opportunities for players to make their case for next season’s roster. As for Wahlstrom, it seems his future may lie elsewhere, with his chances in Boston fading. While it’s unclear if he’ll be called up again, Wahlstrom is making the most of his time in the AHL and showing he can still find his scoring touch.
