Even when it feels like everything has shifted, some things remain constant.
The Oklahoma Sooners, four-time defending national champions, kicked off their SEC era with a statement sweep of previously unbeaten South Carolina in a top-10 showdown. Both teams entered the series as the last undefeated squads in college softball, but by Sunday, only OU remained flawless at 22-0, while No. 10 South Carolina fell to 20-3.
Despite their perfect record and No. 1 ranking, doubts lingered about the Sooners’ strength of schedule, as they sat 26th in the initial RPI rankings. Critics questioned whether Patty Gasso’s reloaded roster could maintain dominance in a tougher conference. But the sweep of South Carolina silenced skeptics, proving that even with a new lineup and a new league, the Sooners are still the same powerhouse under Gasso’s leadership.
OU’s explosive offense shined in Game 1, clinching a 10-9 victory with three home runs. After a day off, the Sooners completed the sweep Sunday with a doubleheader. Game 1 ended in dramatic fashion with a walk-off double from Gabbie Garcia, fueled by four homers in a 10-9 win. In Game 2, pitcher Audrey Lowry delivered a gem, tossing a complete game with just three hits and one run allowed in a 2-1 victory.
The Sooners’ early runs in Game 2—courtesy of RBIs from McEnroe-Marinas and Garcia—proved enough, showcasing their ability to win in multiple ways. Now, OU faces a grueling SEC slate, starting with a series at No. 10 Arkansas after a midweek clash against Tulsa. With only Missouri unranked among their conference foes, the schedule won’t get easier.
But if this weekend proved anything, it’s that the SEC should be wary. While the league may have changed for others, the Sooners remain the same dominant force they’ve always been.
