MAJOR DEFENSIVE BOOST: Vikings Make Shocking Move To Land Former 49ers Star Javon Hargrave in Blockbuster Two-year, $30 million Contract

Former San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Javon Hargrave has signed a free-agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings, according to multiple sources.

As reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal is a two-year contract worth $30 million, including $19 million in guaranteed money.

Hargrave, 32, missed the final 14 games of the 2024 season due to a torn right triceps.

A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Hargrave has accumulated 380 tackles and 45.5 sacks over 130 career games (115 starts) with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2016-19), Philadelphia Eagles (2020-22), and 49ers.

In other news, the Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, and Miami Dolphins each received four additional picks in the 2025 NFL Draft due to their performance in last year’s free agency period, based on the players they lost and signed.

The San Francisco 49ers also earned four compensatory picks, three of which were a result of free agency moves and one for developing DeMeco Ryans as a head coach. The NFL announced on Tuesday that 15 teams were awarded a total of 35 compensatory picks for the upcoming draft.

Compensatory draft picks are given to teams that lose more or higher-value compensatory free agents (CFAs) than they acquire in a given year. These picks are assigned between the third and seventh rounds, depending on the value of the lost free agents.

The CFAs are determined by a formula developed by the NFL Management Council, which factors in salary, playing time, and postseason honors. This formula aims to assess the net loss a team experiences from their CFA departures during the previous free-agent period. It doesn’t account for every free agent a team loses or signs.

Additionally, the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams, and Detroit Lions each received a special compensatory pick due to the hiring of minority employees by other teams as head coaches or general managers, as part of a 2020 amendment to the collective bargaining agreement to encourage diversity and inclusion within the NFL. Teams that lose a minority employee to another club in one of these roles receive a third-round pick in each of the next two drafts, with a third year added if two such hires occur.
