The New England Patriots have already made waves in free agency by adding former Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Robert Spillane to their defensive lineup. Now, they’re reportedly bringing in another ex-Raider to strengthen their unit.
According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Patriots are set to sign edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson to a one-year contract worth up to $5 million. Chaisson becomes the latest addition to New England’s overhauled defense, joining recent signings like defensive tackle Milton Williams, cornerback Carlton Davis, defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga, and outside linebacker Harold Landry.
Chaisson, a former first-round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2020 NFL Draft, struggled to meet expectations during his four seasons in Jacksonville. Selected 20th overall out of LSU, he recorded just five sacks, 73 tackles, and 23 quarterback hits during his tenure with the Jaguars. However, he turned a corner last season with the Raiders, posting career highs in sacks (5) and tackles (32), along with two passes defended and his first career interception.
At 6-foot-3 and 253 pounds, Chaisson brings a combination of size and athleticism to the Patriots’ front seven—a much-needed boost for a unit that finished last in the NFL in sacks in 2023. His speed and ability to pressure the quarterback should fit well into the defensive schemes of head coach Mike Vrabel and defensive line coach Terrell Williams, as the Patriots aim to get faster and more dynamic on defense this offseason. This shift comes after the departure of players like Deatrich Wise Jr., who reportedly signed with the Washington Commanders in free agency.
Chaisson also has a familiar face in New England’s coaching staff. Doug Marrone, the Patriots’ offensive line coach, was Jacksonville’s head coach during Chaisson’s rookie season, providing a potential comfort zone for the 25-year-old pass rusher as he looks to make an impact in his new role.
