The New York Yankees have been hit hard by injuries to their starting rotation. Gerrit Cole will miss the entire season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and Luis Gil is sidelined with a lat injury. While the Yankees might not want to pay top dollar for big-name pitchers like Dylan Cease, Sandy Alcántara, Luis Castillo, or Michael King, they could potentially trade for a solid arm from the San Francisco Giants.
FanSided’s Nick San Miguel suggested a trade sending right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks to the Yankees. In return, the Giants would receive left-handed pitcher Tim Hill. Hill, who was re-signed by the Yankees on a one-year, $2.8 million deal this offseason, has a $3 million club option for 2027. This move would see New York part with one of their reliable lefty relievers.
San Miguel wrote, “The Yankees would be getting an electric, though occasionally inconsistent, arm with starting potential.” Hicks, who signed a four-year, $44 million deal with the Giants last year, made 20 starts and appeared as a reliever nine times in 2024. He finished with a 4.10 ERA, which was slightly better as a starter than as a reliever. The Giants might be willing to move him to bolster their bullpen after trading away left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers.
“The Giants now have a vacancy for a lefty reliever alongside Erik Miller, and if manager Bob Melvin believes that’s necessary, adding the veteran Tim Hill could be a smart move,” wrote San Miguel. With Opening Day just around the corner, the Yankees could wait until the trade deadline to add a starter, but that risks them falling behind in the American League standings.
