The New York Yankees have a clear need to strengthen their infield, especially at third base, even before DJ LeMahieu’s injury added to the concern. While top-tier options are scarce, a recent move by the Colorado Rockies might suggest they’re willing to make deals.
On Saturday, the Rockies traded Nolan Jones to the Cleveland Guardians, a move that could signal they’re open to trading other key players like Ryan McMahon.
McMahon, who signed a five-year, $70 million deal with the Rockies in 2022, has played 532 career games at third base and would be an immediate upgrade over the Yankees’ current options. He was an All-Star last season, hitting 20 home runs, and has surpassed 20 home runs in five of the past six seasons (the only exception being the shortened 2020 campaign).
Defensively, McMahon excels with 37 Outs Above Average (OAA) since 2021, ranking just behind Nolan Arenado and Ke’Bryan Hayes among all third basemen.
His defensive prowess has likely prevented him from winning Gold Gloves, despite his elite skills at the position. With Giancarlo Stanton now on the injured list, acquiring McMahon could not only bring power back to the Yankees’ lineup but also fill a significant gap in their roster.
