Second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy is positioned to take on the starting role for the Minnesota Vikings in 2025 after the team traded up in the 2024 draft, moving from No. 11 to No. 10 to select the former Michigan Wolverines QB and national champion.
McCarthy’s rookie season was derailed by a torn meniscus in the preseason opener of 2024, keeping him sidelined. However, the Vikings have shown strong faith in McCarthy, and he’s now sharing optimistic updates about his recovery.
In a video posted by the Vikings on March 24, McCarthy discussed his rehab process, acknowledging that recovery isn’t a straight path and comes with both highs and lows. “[McCarthy]’s mindset helped him as he attacked his recovery his rookie season,” the Vikings captioned the post.
Reflecting on his first NFL game and the devastating season-ending injury, McCarthy described the experience as “magical,” despite the rough start with an interception. He bounced back during the game, showcasing resilience, and stressed that he’s determined to continue that mindset throughout his career. He also explained how his injury helped him focus on the mental and spiritual aspects of his life and career, realizing the importance of grounding himself for what lies ahead.
The season didn’t go the way I wanted, but I’m going to keep pushing forward,” McCarthy said. “I’m focusing on the positive, working on the foundational stuff before everything really takes off.”
For Vikings fans, McCarthy promises to bring something unique to the field. “What they can expect from me is someone they haven’t seen before. I’m going to give it my all – not just in games, but in every snap, every practice, every meeting.”
McCarthy has now fully recovered from two surgeries related to his injury and the resulting swelling, though his initial weight loss during rehab drew attention. However, two months later, McCarthy’s physique is catching eyes again. Kay Adams teased an upcoming interview with McCarthy, showing a noticeably bulkier version of the QB compared to the end of the 2024 season. One fan on X pointed out the visible size difference, noting McCarthy is now around 210 pounds.
While weight changes are common for athletes in recovery, McCarthy’s progress has reassured fans that he is on track for a successful return.
