EXCLUSIVE; “Big Ten Beast to SEC Bruiser: Transfer OL Luke Baklenko Says He’s Ready for the Challenge!

Last season, Oklahoma was highly active in the transfer portal, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. Of the 12 non-special teams transfers the Sooners brought in, nine were offensive players, including two much-needed reinforcements for the offensive line. For Oklahoma to take a major leap this season, improvement in the trenches is non-negotiable.

The Sooners’ offensive line struggled mightily in 2023, surrendering a staggering 50 sacks—the most in the SEC by a wide margin. If Oklahoma wants to compete at the highest level, protecting the quarterback and establishing a more physical presence up front will be key.

Luke Baklenko Ready to Anchor the Line

With a new offensive system in place, Oklahoma hopes to restore its championship-caliber offense, and one of the key additions to help that effort is transfer offensive lineman Luke Baklenko. The former Stanford standout brings size, athleticism, and experience to a unit desperate for stability. At 6-foot-6 and 315 pounds, Baklenko has the versatility to play multiple positions along the line, making him a crucial piece in Oklahoma’s rebuilding efforts.

Baklenko has embraced the challenge of transitioning to the SEC, a conference known for its dominant defensive fronts. “I know the SEC is a different animal, but I’m ready for the challenge,” Baklenko said. “The physicality, the speed—everything is turned up a notch, and that’s exactly why I came here.”

The Road to Redemption

Under new offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic, the Sooners are looking for a complete turnaround in the trenches. Alongside Baklenko, Oklahoma has also added other key pieces through recruiting and the portal, aiming to build a unit capable of holding its own against the SEC’s best.

With a new system, new faces, and a renewed focus on physicality, Oklahoma’s offensive line has a chance to flip the script in 2024. If Baklenko and his fellow linemen can help solidify the front, the Sooners’ offense could once again be among the most dangerous in college football.
