The Boston Red Sox are reportedly one of the leading teams vying for the services of St. Louis Cardinals’ All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado. The Cardinals are eager to offload Arenado’s hefty contract, but his no-trade clause has added complexity to any potential deal. Despite the challenge, the Red Sox are seen as a logical suitor. However, Boston has been hesitant to take on a significant portion of Arenado’s remaining salary, which has stalled any trade talks so far.
Cody Williams of FanSided recently suggested a trade scenario that could make acquiring Arenado more palatable for the Red Sox. His proposal involves Boston pursuing both Arenado and Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley in a single blockbuster deal.
Williams noted that while the Red Sox had been linked to top-tier bullpen arms like Tanner Scott, acquiring Helsley would significantly improve Boston’s relief pitching, making a trade for Arenado more enticing.
In this scenario, the Red Sox would agree to absorb a larger portion of Arenado’s remaining $52 million salary—potentially around $40 million—if the Cardinals include Helsley in the package. Helsley’s inclusion would sweeten the deal, as it would bolster Boston’s bullpen while still filling a critical gap in their lineup with Arenado. To facilitate this, the Red Sox would likely need to part with several of their top prospects, which would help the Cardinals rebuild their farm system while addressing their immediate financial concerns.
