Spencer Schwellenbach pitched eight scoreless innings, leading the Atlanta Braves to their first win of the season, a dominant 10-0 victory over the Miami Marlins in the opening game of a three-game series on Friday.
Schwellenbach (1-0) extended his scoreless innings streak to 14, delivering the longest start of his career. He allowed just two hits, with neither Marlins runner advancing past first base, struck out 10 batters, and issued no walks. Aaron Bummer wrapped up the game with a scoreless ninth inning.
Marcell Ozuna was a major contributor to the offense, going 3-for-5 with his first home run and double of the year. He scored three times and drove in three runs. In the seventh inning, Matt Olson followed Ozuna’s homer with a 434-foot blast to right-center field for his first home run of the season.
Olson also drove in two more runs with a single during the Braves’ five-run rally in the eighth inning. The Braves set a season-high with 16 hits, with six players recording multiple hits, including Michael Harris II, who had three, while Austin Riley, Ozzie Albies, and Bryan De La Cruz each added two.
This win snapped Atlanta’s seven-game losing streak, preventing them from matching the franchise-worst 0-10 start of 1988. The Braves were the last team in the majors to secure a victory. On the mound for the Marlins, Max Meyer (0-1) pitched six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, two walks, and a career-high eight strikeouts. It was the longest outing by a Marlins starter this season.
Schwellenbach didn’t allow a baserunner until the fifth inning when Liam Hicks singled to left with two outs. The Braves scored three runs in the third inning, with Ozuna hitting a two-run double to center and Riley following with an RBI single to right.
Ozuna’s home run in the seventh came after a wild play: His fly ball to left-center was initially ruled a catch after Marlins outfielder Dane Myers leapt over the wall, but video review overturned the call, showing the ball had bounced off the top of the wall after Myers mishandled it.
