The New York Yankees have undergone significant changes this season, with one of the most notable shifts being Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s new role as the team’s everyday second baseman, in addition to the departure of Juan Soto.
Jazz Chisholm Brings Major Improvement to Second Base For over six years, Gleyber Torres served as the Yankees’ primary second baseman. While his early years were promising with two All-Star selections, his performance became inconsistent in the latter part of his tenure, particularly on defense.
This led the team to part ways with him during the offseason, as he signed with the Detroit Tigers. Torres’ defensive struggles were a key reason the Yankees initially planned to move him to third base after acquiring Chisholm last season. However, Torres refused to switch positions, forcing Chisholm to play out of position at third base.
Now that Chisholm has returned to his natural second base role, he has made an immediate impact, starting the 2025 season strong with four home runs in just seven games and solid defensive play. The difference between him and Torres at second base has been striking.
Chisholm’s Impact Has Been Huge for the Yankees’ Strong Start Since switching to a new bat, Chisholm has displayed impressive power and improved contact quality. His presence in the lineup has provided crucial protection for Aaron Judge, contributing to Judge’s historic start and the Yankees’ early success. Although the season is still young, the Yankees have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about Chisholm’s strong performance. At just 27 years old with two more years of team control, the best of Chisholm is yet to come.
The Yankees are on a mission for redemption this season and aiming for a return to the World Series. Chisholm will play a key role in their pursuit of that goal.
