The University of Pittsburgh Panthers basketball team has officially lost guard Jaland Lowe. After entering the transfer portal last week, Lowe has now made his decision to leave the Panthers following two seasons with the program. On Saturday, he committed to the University of Kentucky Wildcats, as confirmed by ESPN and his agency, ProMondo Sports.
Kentucky head coach Mark Pope had met with Lowe last week. Initially, Lowe had declared himself as “Do Not Contact” upon entering the transfer portal, sparking rumors that he either had a specific school in mind or could return to Pittsburgh.
Kentucky finished the season with a 24-12 record, placing sixth in the ACC, and earned a third seed in the NCAA tournament. They won their first two games before being eliminated by Tennessee in the Sweet 16. Lowe, a 3rd Team All-ACC selection, had a standout sophomore season, averaging 16.8 points, 5.5 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and nearly 2 steals per game.
Over his two years with the Panthers, Lowe posted averages of 13.1 points and 4.3 assists per game, shooting 38.1% from the field and 87.7% from the free-throw line, although his three-point shooting was a struggle at 29.8%.
Pittsburgh ended the season with a 17-15 record and a first-round exit in the ACC tournament, missing out on the NCAA tournament for the seventh time in eight years. The Panthers recently added 6’11” transfer center Dishon Jackson from Iowa State, but will also lose several players to the transfer portal and graduation, including forwards Guillermo Diaz Graham, Jorge Diaz Graham, and guard Marlon Barnes Jr., along with Ishmael Leggett, Zack Austin, and Damian Dunn.
