MAJOR_NEWS: Yankees Shift Gears After Guerrero Bombshell — Now Eyeing $108M Ace to Save Their Season!

The New York Yankees were once seen as potential suitors for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., whether through free agency or a trade. However, those plans have been dashed, as Guerrero has reportedly agreed to a massive 14-year, $500 million extension with the Toronto Blue Jays. With Guerrero off the table, the Yankees may now shift focus as they approach this year’s trade deadline.

Bleacher Report’s Joseph Zucker suggested the Yankees could pursue San Diego Padres pitcher Dylan Cease. “San Diego’s decision to keep Cease through Opening Day shows they’re serious about contending, and their 8-2 start supports that,” wrote Zucker. “But if the Padres falter, the Yankees could circle back on Cease or even consider bringing Michael King back.”

While Guerrero would have filled a long-standing need at first base, Cease could be a valuable upgrade for New York’s rotation. He’s set to become a free agent after the season and would be a likely trade candidate if the Padres fall out of contention. Spotrac projects Cease’s next contract at five years, $108 million — a much more affordable option compared to Guerrero’s potential cost.

If the Yankees acquired Cease, he could join a rotation featuring Max Fried and Luis Gil when healthy, with Gerrit Cole expected to return later. Cease has been reliable, posting a 3.38 ERA in 10 2/3 innings this season, with 30-plus starts in each of the last four years, a 3.40 ERA over that span, and two top-five Cy Young finishes on his resume.
