The South Carolina Gamecocks football team has strengthened its linebacker unit by securing a commitment from Justin Okoronkwo, a 6-foot-3, 228-pound true freshman who previously played for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Hailing from Munich, Germany, Okoronkwo entered the transfer portal last weekend and has now decided to continue his collegiate career with the Gamecocks.
In his only season at Alabama, Okoronkwo participated in all 13 games, primarily contributing on special teams and as a defensive reserve, recording 14 tackles and half a tackle for loss. His athletic career began in Germany, where he was involved in soccer and gymnastics before switching to American football about five years ago.
His rapid development and standout physical attributes caught the attention of college scouts during the American camp circuit two summers ago, leading to scholarship offers from schools like South Carolina, Michigan, and Penn State, with Okoronkwo ultimately committing to Alabama.
Okoronkwo’s addition is the second linebacker transfer for South Carolina, with both players having started their college careers at Alabama. Back in December, the Gamecocks also signed linebacker Shawn Murphy, who transferred from Alabama as well.
This strategic acquisition enhances South Carolina’s linebacker depth and brings a player with a unique athletic background to the team. Fans can look forward to Okoronkwo’s exceptional skill set and international experience making an impact on the Gamecocks’ defense in the upcoming season.
