According to a proposal from Newsweek’s Zach Pressnell, the Yankees could make a major splash by acquiring two high-impact players: starter Michael King and infielder Luis Arráez, both of whom are set to hit free agency after the season.

• Padres receive: OF Spencer Jones, RHP Ben Hess, RHP Cade Smith

Pressnell suggests that if the Yankees don’t want to give up the massive prospect haul needed to land someone like Sandy Alcántara, a reunion with King would be a savvy move. The former Yankee has front-line starter potential and is projected by Spotrac to land a four-year, $71 million contract this offseason. He broke out in 2024 with a 2.95 ERA over 30 starts, finishing seventh in NL Cy Young voting.

Adding Arráez would give the Yankees a much-needed contact bat at the top of the order. He could slot in at second base, with Jazz Chisholm Jr. moving to third—filling the void left by an aging and currently injured DJ LeMahieu. Arráez, a three-time batting champ, is expected to command a nine-year, $154 million deal in free agency and is widely viewed as a prime trade candidate if the Padres decide to sell.

While the deal hinges on San Diego’s playoff outlook, this blockbuster would instantly address two of the Yankees’ most pressing needs.
