The Atlanta Braves recently welcomed back their All-Star catcher, Sean Murphy, from a rehab assignment. To make room on the roster, veteran backup Chadwick Tromp was the odd man out, especially with rising prospect Drake Baldwin turning heads.
Tromp had been a reliable option behind the plate whenever Murphy or Travis d’Arnaud were sidelined, and he was also a beloved figure in the clubhouse — known for his upbeat personality, a trait often seen in players from Curaçao.
After being outrighted to Triple-A Gwinnett, Tromp chose free agency instead, a move that didn’t surprise many. He’s earned the opportunity to seek a role on another MLB roster. The Braves still have plenty of depth at catcher, including Murphy, Baldwin, James McCann, and Jason Delay.
Even as he departed, Tromp reminded fans why he was so well-liked. Just days before being designated for assignment, he showed his class by reaching out to a Braves fan on social media. The fan, a popular Braves supporter known as Beaneater Buzz, had to miss Opening Day due to his daughter’s medical appointment at UVA. After hearing his story, Tromp messaged him offering to cover tickets for a future game.
The fan was moved by the gesture, calling out Tromp’s humility and kindness. It was another reminder of the type of person the Braves aim to bring into their clubhouse — not just good players, but good people.
Though Tromp didn’t have a major role on the field, his presence was deeply felt. As one fan put it: “Sometimes a guy doesn’t play a big role statistically, but their absence still leaves a mark. This is one of those guys.” Wherever Tromp goes next, he’ll be a valued addition, both for his character and his steady hand behind the plate.
