Spencer Strider made his 2025 season debut after recovering from Tommy John surgery to repair a torn UCL in his right elbow. In the Braves’ 3-1 loss to the Blue Jays on Wednesday, Strider looked sharp and reached a career milestone of 500 strikeouts. However, when asked about the achievement, the 26-year-old made it clear his focus is on the team, not personal stats. “My job isn’t to come back and have a moment and all that,” he said. “That’s not how I look at it. I’m here to help the team.”
In his return to the mound, Strider struck out five batters, gave up five hits, one walk, and allowed two earned runs over five innings—a promising performance as he works his way back. Braves manager Brian Snitker praised Strider’s outing and expects him to improve with time, noting, “He’ll get stronger as he goes. As long as he feels good. There’s no more determined or dedicated person than him.”
Now in his fifth MLB season, Strider was emerging as one of the league’s top young pitchers before his injury in 2024. Coming into Wednesday, he held a 3.47 ERA and 1.071 WHIP, along with 495 strikeouts in 329.2 innings. He’s expected to take the mound again during the Braves’ upcoming series against the Cardinals. The team, currently struggling with a 5-13 record and missing Ronald Acuña Jr., is hoping Strider’s return can help turn things around.
