The New York Yankees had their most successful season in over a decade this year, but unfortunately, they were still unable to surpass the dominant Los Angeles Dodgers. Now, the Yankees’ focus shifts to the offseason, where they must enhance their roster to compete with both the Dodgers and the rest of the league.
The primary goal for Aaron Boone’s team is to bring Juan Soto back into the fold and into the lineup. Beyond that, free agency presents a host of tempting players to target.
If the Yankees can’t outplay the Dodgers, they might as well aim to poach some of their talent, right? MLB Network’s Jon Morosi recently reported that the Yankees and Dodgers’ free-agent pitcher, Walker Buehler, have expressed “mutual interest” in a potential contract.
Buehler to the Yankees could be a good move for both parties. Spotrac projects Buehler to sign a one-year deal worth $3.9 million, though he may secure a slightly higher value.
At such a modest price, the Yankees could sign him and then trade a pitcher like Nestor Cortes or Marcus Stroman. This would allow them to improve their pitching staff while also acquiring prospects in the process.
Signing Buehler would also create a slight weakening of the Dodgers’ roster, even if it’s a small shift. Any opportunity to chip away at the Dodgers’ strength should be taken advantage of. Given the fit, cost, and market conditions, the Yankees would be wise to pursue this option.
