Yankees Place Trent Grisham on Paternity List, Call Up Jorbit Vivas
The New York Yankees announced today that outfielder Trent Grisham has been placed on the Paternity List, with infielder Jorbit Vivas getting the call-up in his place. Grisham has been on fire to start the 2025 season, launching six home runs and posting a 1.093 OPS over his first 20 games. With Giancarlo Stanton sidelined, Grisham’s bat has become even more vital in the lineup, and the team will definitely miss his impact in the upcoming Cleveland series. Still, the reason for his absence is a happy one — as he welcomes a new baby into his family — and the Yankees extended their congratulations.
Enter Jorbit Vivas, a versatile infielder acquired from the Dodgers alongside Victor González last year. He’s been tearing it up in Triple-A with a .432 OBP, 152 wRC+, and improved contact quality through 20 games. His promotion gives the Yankees some much-needed infield depth, especially with Jazz Chisholm’s suspension still looming as he continues to appeal.
While outfielder Everson Pereira might’ve seemed like a natural replacement for Grisham, the Yankees opted for the left-handed hitting Vivas due to a stretch of upcoming matchups against right-handed pitchers. Vivas has shown growth at the plate, with a .407 wOBA and xwOBA, and the organization believes he’s fully bounced back from a Spring Training injury that slowed his 2024 development. His improved discipline and ability to spray line drives have the team optimistic about his potential.
Known for his strong defense at second base, Vivas also brings speed and can give the Yankees quality at-bats in spot starts. Even if he doesn’t get immediate playing time — as was the case during his brief big-league stint last season — he could be a valuable short-term contributor, especially if Chisholm ends up serving his suspension.
