The Yankees’ offseason could unfold in various ways, with the primary focus on star outfielder Juan Soto. However, the team is also considering strengthening its bullpen, acquiring a new first baseman, and possibly reshaping the starting rotation.
Currently, the pitching staff is crowded. Ace Gerrit Cole will remain after briefly exploring free agency, and Rookie of the Year Luis Gil has secured a spot at the top of the rotation. Clarke Schmidt and Carlos Rodon are also expected to be part of the mix.
Additionally, the Yankees may target veterans Nestor Cortes and Marcus Stroman, both of whom have been linked to trade rumors. Any move would likely depend on finding an upgrade.
According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, one possible upgrade the Yankees are eyeing is pitcher Walker Buehler, a potential bargain. Buehler, a free agent, impressed during the playoffs this year with a 3.60 ERA over four appearances.
Morosi mentioned that there is mutual interest between the Yankees and Buehler, adding that it would be an interesting storyline if Buehler ended up pitching for the Yankees after throwing the final pitch of the 2024 World Series, a game the Dodgers won against the Yankees.
Despite the intrigue, acquiring Buehler comes with risk. The former All-Star and 2021 standout underwent Tommy John surgery and missed all of 2023.
He returned in 2024 but struggled with a hip injury, finishing with a 1-6 record and a 5.38 ERA. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel predicts Buehler could secure a three-year, $54 million contract, noting that while his return from surgery has turned him into more of a finesse pitcher than the power ace he once was, he showed signs of improvement late in the season and in the playoffs. With no qualifying offer attached, Buehler could be a low-risk, high-reward addition for a team with strong pitching development capabilities.
