Dee Fludd of the Northeast Flag Football League shared that his long-standing relationship with New York Giants owner John Mara helped pave the way for launching a girls’ flag football program in Bridgeport.
On Tuesday afternoon, Interim Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery joined city officials at the Harding High School football field to deliver what he called a “historic announcement.”
“Bridgeport Public Schools are teaming up with the New York Giants to introduce the city’s first-ever girls flag football program,” said Avery. “As a father of three daughters, I believe it’s crucial to provide equal opportunities like this for all students.”

Fludd explained that Mara has been eager to bring a program like this to Bridgeport for some time, and the current surge in interest made the timing ideal. “There’s never been a better moment to launch something so impactful. It’s exciting—and it’s been a long time coming,” Fludd said.
The New York Giants will support the initiative by lending their name and expertise to help ensure the program’s success, he added.
Bridgeport girls ages 13 to 18 are encouraged to attend a flag football “jamboree” on June 8 at Seaside Park, where they can try out the sport and learn more about the new program.
